In this Zim’s Healthy Living series we have been having a lot of fun diving into the vitamins and supplements that help us having a healthy happy life. Today we are talking about a vitamin that comes directly from the sun itself: vitamin D. Indeed, vitamin D is produced when “ultraviolet rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis.” However, it can be consumed in other ways including consuming various foods like salmon, dairy and mushrooms.
Vitamin D is a particularly important nutrient for runners and other athletes because it helps increase our muscle strength. Scientists recently found a link between vitamin D and ”aspects of lower limb strength. This included power, velocity and jump height.”
Optimizing muscle mass is particularly important for our senior citizens who are vulnerable to falls and injuries. The stronger their muscle mass is the more resilient they will be when accidents occur.
For a while organized medicine was resistant to Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin meaning it is absorbed through our fat cells. Fatty fishes like salmon are a very good way to get these healthy fats into your body. Other good sources are canned fish like herring and sardines, cod liver oil, eggs, mushrooms and more
Believe it or not 50% of the world’s population may not get enough sun, and 40% of US residents are deficient in vitamin D. Especially given the events of 2020 this is not good. We need to get outside, get some sun, eat some delicious food and feel the rewed energy that we all need so desperately right now.
Here is a delicious recipe for pan seared salmon. There are many similar recipes you can find online or in cookbooks. The freshest you can get the fish the better, the wilder it is the better.
