It seems like just yesterday we were ringing in the new year for 2021 and now we are already finished the month of April. This leaves most of us thinking about the summer and swimsuit season! But how do we get ready for the summer in a healthy way and get the exercise we need to be our best selves?

The first key is to find something that you love doing. For some that is swimming and now that summer is almost here the lakes and oceans are going to be warm enough to enjoy. Swimming is also a low intensity workout that can be enjoyed at any age. Open water swimming is inherently group oriented so it has a positive social dynamic as well.

Maybe you enjoy an aerobics or yoga class? Maybe kickboxing excites you? Find what it is and work that into your schedule. If you enjoy what you are doing you are way more likely to stay dedicated and invested in your exercise routine.

The Department of Health and Human Services recommends these guidelines for exercise:

  1. Get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or vigorous aerobic activity a week, or a combination of the two. Spreading out your exercise over the course of the week provides the greatest health benefit and even small amounts of activity are helpful. Perhaps take a walk around the block or go up and down your stairs a few times just to start moving.
  2. Strength training for all major muscle groups is recommended at least 2 times a week. This does not need to be at a fancy gym but free weights or even water jugs can do the trick
  3. Make sure to warm up and cool down when exercising to help prevent injury and sore muscles.

If you do have post-workout pain try any of the Zim’s line of pain relief products to help with quick natural relief. You won’t regret it and you’ll be on your way to a fun, confident and active summer
