Sometimes it’s the simplest steps that make the biggest difference to our health. Advice like drinking more water or getting enough sleep can have huge impacts on how we feel each day. Another simple tip that helps reduce stress and feel better mentally and physically is to take deeper breaths.

What do we mean by a deep breath? This is when we allow our lungs to fill up and expand our diaphragm by filling up our chests with air. Singers often learn techniques to breathe deeply because they want to get as much air as possible to hold out long notes.

Some simple breathing exercises can be done to help your body inhale more air. The American Lung Association has a whole section of their website on deep breathing with lots of great suggestions. They even have some video tutorials to walk you through the process.

It is important we use these deep breathing techniques to help us both mentally and physically in our bodies. Leading research shows deep breathing “allows you to calm your mind and reduce the concentration of stress hormones in your blood.” It also gives you a second to release anxiety and focus on what matters most in your life. It brings clarity and peace. Even if it’s just for a second it can have a big impact on our day.
